A Plague of Ilgness

I read Matt Carpenter’s piece last year along with subsequent editorial letters and passed them off as personal points of view. After reading Steve Ilg’s letter, I am forced to dust off my pen and literally scratch out a rebuttal to such elitist remarks.

“Not meeting the requirement of the mountain” and “abandonment of spirit?” Come on! The only requirement of the mountain is to see the runner finish.

Spirit? Isn’t that what a love of racing is all about? Did someone put a gun to those runners’ heads and say they had to do it? I don’t think so. Having done both races, I can honestly say that all who finish are heroes. We would not have as many “mountain athletes” if it weren’t for prize and appearance money. Surely Steve Ilg is out of touch, for all runners are brothers and sisters of the Cool-Max Cloth.

Maybe Steve Ilg should “contemplate the authenticity of what it truly means” to get a life. I ran the ascent in 1981. What constitutes the “old days"?
