Peaktus Interruptus Repeatus

What a disturbing article written by Matt Carpenter. This year marked my eighth Pikes Peak Ascent, and I won this year’s Triple Crown in my age group — so I know what it takes to do the Ascent and win. And believe me, Matt, it certainly does not feel like half winning! It takes a lot of will power, strength, determination and plain “guts” to do the Ascent. Some of us like to go out the very next day and pound the pavement and we can after doing just the Ascent. I have seen friends who’ve done the round trip unable to run for weeks, let alone run very well. So I think the decision is up to the individual runner, but don’t criticize the Ascent runners for choosing a run that will leave them feeling drained and exhausted but also able to join others the very next day for a run that makes them feel good!

My hat is off to the Marathon runners, but no more than to the Ascent runners. Please don’t try to belittle our accomplishments because you chose not to do the Marathon this year — that’s judgmental and unfair!
