2001

12/30/01 Because Skyrunner.com is getting so many visits I converted the PPM race countdown timer into text for the most popular browsers. This saves a boatload of server calls for the digits when they were images.

12/29/01 A medal commemorating the 13th running of the Pikes Peak Marathon is just one of the medals you will find on a new Skyrunner.com page — A Pikes Peak Medal collection.

12/24/01 Although I have known about the Pikes Peak Cam forever I just now looked at their “favorite submitted images” page. Wow, there are some that are making me wish for summer already! Also, when you click on them you get an enlarged version that is more than large enough to serve as desktop wallpapers:-)

12/21/01 While doing some research on Walt Stack and Peter Strudwick I ran across some links about these Peak Runners. The links have been added to the Pikes Peak Books page. Also added were some links to quickly show the peak races that eight of the book authors have run.

12/19/2001 The streakers page has been updated to show the people that have the longest single race streaks. [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015]

12/11/2001 As hoped the info sent by Dennis Kavanaugh (see post below) pretty much finished off the 1969 and 1970 results:-) One of the neat things about working on past results is discovering neat little tidbits. For example most books and results say there were no women who ran the races from 1965-1970 but while going over the copies Dennis sent me there was in fact a female Ascent finisher in 1970. Dennis also took the time to use other year’s results to fix some spelling inconsistencies which seemed to happen a lot back then. The results archives just keeps getting better! [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015]

12/10/2001 Thanks to a letter sent to me by Dennis Kavanaugh, who ran the PPA in 1975 and 1978, I was able to complete the 1968 Pikes Peak Marathon results!!! If you have been following along I have only had partial results for 1968-1970. Dennis sent me copies of the 1968-1970 PPM results that were published in the Long Distance Log. This just leaves a few missing Ascent age-group results for 1968. Based on what he sent me I will also be able to take a good chunk out of the 1969 and 1970 marathons as well and will be updating them soon:-)

12/03/2001 Five more stories were added to the “First person race accounts - learn before you burn” section of Pikes Peak Central. They include; Jill Gainer’s 2001 Ascent, Mike Perry’s 2001 Marathon, Paul Kirsch’s 2001 Ascent, Steve Sargeant’s 2001 Marathon and Bill Wright’s 2001 Marathon. Stories from other people’s races are a great way to learn and I thank these people for sending the link to their story or just sending their story.

9/19/2001 In the single year age records page I had made a mistake! [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015] As you may know the course was lengthened in 1976. In my query for the records for the marathon I did a search for fastest times by age for “year > 1976” when it should have been “year >= 1976.” Because of that 6 single year age records set in 1976 were not listed. Thanks to Ruth Anderson for pointing this out. Ruth holds the 47 and 61 single year age records which also happen to be the 5-year age-group records.

9/6/2001 The “things done right/things done wrong” stories are a valuable learning tool and 53 more of them from the 2001 races were added bringing the total to 124.

9/4/2001 Thanks to Valerie Prothe the 1971 results have been added to the results archives. [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015] Only 4 years remain to complete the archives:-)

8/29/2001 The ink is not even dry (or is that the bits are not even uploaded) on the new stats pages and already I have had a request for even more stats. Someone wanted to know who has the most doubles. That info has now been added to the doubler’s page. [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015]

8/28/2001 Valerie Prothe e-mailed me the 1968, ’69 and ’70 Pikes Peak Marathon results that we could find for the results archives. [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015] I am still in need of the complete results for these years! I was having a mental block about finishing the archives since these were incomplete results. However, for the time being I have done the best I can and now I can move on to the final 5 years (1971-1975) that still need to be input.

8/27/2001 The new streakers page has been changed to make it easier to see the races that each runner has done. [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015]

8/25/2001 I combed through all the Skyrunner.com Pikes Peak News Archives and put the newspaper stories on one page. Have fun in the press archives. Also Mike Anderson’s 2001 Ascent story was added to the “Learn Before You Burn Stories” section on the main page. Thanks to a good strategy his time was well ahead of his expectations and he made the cutoff for next year's first wave by eleven minutes.

8/24/2001 All the stats pages - records, doublers, state records, etc. have been updated. [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015]

8/23/2001 The 2001 results have been added to the archives [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015] and to the [PPA/M results search moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015]. Also, a list of runners who have run 15 or more PPA/Ms has been compiled. Check out the new streakers page. [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015]

8/3/2001 Over the past week there have been several requests for stats on the double. [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015]

5/7/2001 Barr Camp has their own website now and there is lots of neat information there! Check it out!

4/12/2001 Stats and more stats. With the archives done through the last course change (1976) it is almost easy. Here is a list of the fastest runners from each state. [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015] There are still quite a few states (12, with 8 of them in the female marathon) without times so now is your chance — if you live in one of those state — to get a record!

4/9/2001 GOAL ONE DONE! After almost 4 years of fat finger work by a small but dedicated group of volunteers the results archives are now complete through the last course change which took place in 1976. [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015] This has been a goal for a long time and today Keith Grimes helped finish it off by e-mailing me the 1983 Ascent. In addition 1956-1967 are already in the archives thus leaving only 1968-1975 to finish them all off (goal 2). However I am still needing paper copies of the 1968-1970 results. Let me know if you have a copy!

4/3/2001 After several runs up to Barr Camp with the Incline Club I rewrote several key sections of the course description.

3/25/2001 Keith Grimes e-mailed me the 1983 Pikes Peak Marathon results. He is working on the 1983 Ascent which will complete the results archives back to 1976 — the last course change. [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015]

3/6/2001 I worked with Tony (see 2/27 post) to create “perceived altitude” and “percent O2” calculators for his Pikes Peak O2 paper.

2/27/2001 I am fascinated by the effects of altitude on running. The Incline Club’s Tony Eckel wrote an incredible report for us after I asked him about how the weather can make running on the peak feel a lot different from one day to the next. This is not something to be taken lightly! The EMS people in the summit house experience it all the time. On low pressure days they say people get off the COG and drop like flies! On those days we also run a lot slower up there. Check out Tony’s paper to find out what is going on.

1/16/2001 The results for 1979 and 1980 did not have city and state info listed. Using race entry lists printed in the programs for those years I was able to fill in all but 42 of the 1,357 blanks:-) This will be useful for the “records by state” page I am working on.

1/15/2001 I have been wanting to compile a single year age records page for a long time. [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015] I should have waited just a little longer until 1983 was input but I did not think one year would be that hard to do or that prone to mistakes. Wrong — I can’t imagine how long it would have taken to do all 25 years by hand:-(

1/13/2001 Now that the results archives are almost complete (just need 1983) back to the last course change in 1976 I am going to start creating a bunch of stats. The first is a complete age-group and course record progression table! [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015] If you are like me you love this stuff:-)

1/12/2001 Friends of the Peak has placed an ice detour on Barr Trail! If you are training on the Barr Trail please follow the ice detour signs at No Name Creek. This short detour will take you towards the top of the Incline and around the worst of the ice that has formed at this location.

1/11/2001 Steve Gaulke e-mailed me the men’s races from 1980. This brings the results archives up to 37 years! [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015] Keith Grimes is working on 1983 — the final year needed to complete the archives back to the last course change in 1976! I am still looking for copies of the results from 1968-1970 and input help for any year between 1968-1975. Let me know if you want to help in either area.

1/9/2001 The past winner’s page was updated to show 11 times when someone was first to the top in the marathon but did not win the marathon. [PPA/M results moved to pikespeakmarathon.org in 2015] This makes it easier to spot the fastest ascent times for those years.

1/2/2001 Well done to Paul Sullivan and Rick Hessek for approaching the TCR board and getting the top 10 overall awards reinstated! This year there was going to only be a top 5 and I think it is really neat that the TCR board took the time to listen to Paul and Rick and rethink the decision. A great way to start the year!
